NEONATOLOGY

Fellowship Clinical Activities

  • Diverse and complex patient population for clinical training experience; at University Hospital, the program's primary facility for fellowship training, approximately 15 percent of NICU admissions are neonates <1500 grams; there are ample training opportunities in pulmonary disorders with the numbers of infants requiring CPAP or ventilator support
  • 4-week rotation in transport ECMO at Wilford Hall Medical Center/Lackland AFB, whose Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has a nationally recognized ECMO center with the only available ECMO transport personnel and equipment in the United States
  • 4-week rotation in Cardiothoracic Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU) assisting in management of patients < 3 years of age undergoing operative procedures for congenital heart defects
  • Supportive health care team with a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program for primary care coverage of infants admitted to the Intermediate Neonatal Nursery and for taking night-call
  • Attendance at the PREMIEre Program, a high-risk follow-up program that ensures continuity of medical care for the first three years of life for premature infants < 1500 grams at birth. Fellows participate in delivering specialized services such as developmental testing and comprehensive neurological exams.
